Personnel and Training Required

The interviewer must be trained to conduct personal interviews with individuals from the general population. The interviewer must be trained and found to be competent (i.e., tested by an expert) at the completion of personal interviews.

Equipment Needs

While the source instrument was developed to be administered by computer, the PhenX Working Group acknowledges these questions can be administered in a non-computerized format (i.e. pencil and paper instrument). Computer software is necessary to develop computer-assisted instruments. The interviewer will require a laptop computer/handheld computer to administer a computer-assisted questionnaire.

Lifestage

Adult

Participants

Adults aged ≥49 years*

* While this protocol was used in a study of adults aged ≥49 years, the Ocular Working Group suggests the same methodology can be used with individuals aged 18 years or older.

Selection Rationale

This is a well-established, currently used protocol to assess the timing and burden of eyeglass use. The protocol selected is from a standard questionnaire used routinely in epidemiologic studies of ocular health.

Corrective Lens Use

Release Date

February 26, 2010

Definition

Questions to assess current and past use of eyeglasses and/or contact lenses.

Purpose

Determine the use and need for corrective lenses. Use of glasses or contact lenses, and their timing of use in a pediatric population provide insight regarding effects on visual function, influence refractive error development and progression, and task performance. It is important to determine the history of use of contact lenses because it has been shown to be associated with corneal conditions, such as infections and dry eye syndrome.
