There are two questions. The first question asks about a household‘s annual income from all sources. Categories with ranges of income are provided as response options. Respondents are also asked how many people were supported with this income during the calendar year.

Protocol

One of the things were trying to understand is how peoples income may affect their use of health services. Household income includes your income plus the income of all family members in your household for the last calendar year. Include all wages and other sources of income.

Selection Rationale

The All of Us Research Program and Hispanic Community Health Study / Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL) questions on household income were selected because they ask two simple questions about annual household income from all sources.

Definition

Questions asking the respondent for total household family income and number of people supported by that income in the calendar year.

Purpose

Household income is often associated with the health of those who live in a residence. For example, a family with a lower income often does not have access to the same quality of health care; enough money for the basic necessities (food, rent, gas); or live in a safe or desirable neighborhood.
