Protocol - Voice Impairments - Older Adults

Add to My Toolkit
Description

The Aging Voice Index (AVI) is a 23-item, self-administered questionnaire that asks individuals about the effects of their voice on their lives. The AVI asks the subject to indicate how often each situation occurs in his or her daily life from the following scale: never, rarely, sometimes, usually, or always. Each item is based on a scale of 0 to 4, and the sum of all items is the total score. The AVI’s maximum score is 92. A higher total score indicates the subject’s voice impairment has a greater impact on the quality of life.

Protocol

The Aging Voice Index (AVI) is a self-administered scale used to determine how age-related voice disorders affect daily life. Participants in the study were adults aged 60 years and older, with and without voice disorders. A low score from the AVI scale can be associated with no voice effect on quality of life while higher scores indicate anywhere from mild to severe effects. Since the AVI is a proprietary protocol, you must contact the lead author to obtain permission to use it.
