Personnel and Training Required

An interviewer who is trained to conduct personal interviews with individuals from the general population is required. The interviewer must be trained and found to be competent (i.e., tested by an expert) at the completion of personal interviews. The interviewer should be trained to prompt respondents further if a "dont know" response is provided. The questions could be adapted for use in a self-administered questionnaire.

*While this protocol was used in a study of women, the Cancer Working Group deems it appropriate to use with the general population.

Selection Rationale

The selected protocol obtains information about alcohol consumption at different time periods during the life course. This is important because of the latency of many cancers and the likelihood that habits earlier in life play a role in cancer initiation. Because drinking habits often differ at different periods of life (such as teen years/early 20s versus after age 60 years old), it is important to have these data to calculate total cumulative alcohol consumption over a persons lifetime.
