Protocol - Oral Mucosal Lesions
These interviewer-administered questions address painful sores around or in the mouth and assess the existence of oral mucosal lesions.
1. (During the past 6 months) Did you have painful sores or irritations around the lips or on the tongue, cheeks, or gums more than once?

1b. Did you first have the sores or irritations more than 6 months ago?
Personnel and Training Required
The interviewer must be trained to conduct personal interviews with individuals from the general population. The interviewer must be trained and found to be competent (i.e., tested by an expert) at the completion of personal interviews.* The interviewer should be trained to prompt respondents further if a "dont know" response is provided.
*There are multiple modes to administer this question (e.g., paper-and-pencil and computer-assisted interviews).
