Social Determinants of Health Project and Working Group (2022)

During deliberations from the first SDoH WG, NIMHD and the wider NIH community identified additional areas for which standard measures would be useful. A list of 20 SDoH elements provided the basis for a charge to a second PhenX SDoH WG.

In 2021, the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) funded an administrative supplement to the PhenX project to expand the selection of high-quality standard measures related to SDoH for inclusion in the PhenX (consensus measures for Phenotypes and eXposures) Toolkit (www.phenxtoolkit.org). This expansion focused on adding additional high priority areas that were not already covered in the SDoH collection.

The second PhenX Social Determinants of Health Working Group added protocols to the existing collections and was composed of eight scientists with relevant expertise:

  • Keith Norris, MD, PhD (Co-chair), University of California, Los Angeles
  • Myles Cockburn, PhD (Co-chair), University of Southern California
  • Keisha Bentley-Edwards, PhD, Duke University
  • Denise Dillard, PhD, Washington State University; Southcentral Foundation
  • Yochai Eisenberg, PhD, University of Illinois, Chicago
  • Monik Jimenez, ScD, Harvard University
  • Dinushika Mohottige, MD, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai
  • Keshia Pollack Porter, PhD, John Hopkins University

Protocols added to the PhenX Toolkit

  1. Affordability Problems in Accessing Dental Care
  2. Affordability Problems in Accessing Prescriptions
  3. Discrimination in Health Care
  4. Family History of Incarceration
  5. Healthcare Communications
  6. Housing Instability Due to Affordability
  7. Internet Access
  8. Minimum Wage
  9. Neighborhood Walking and Biking Environment
  10. Perceptions of Housing Insecurity
  11. Physical Activity - Neighborhood Environment
  12. Racial/Ethnic Discrimination - Recent and Lifetime
  13. Religious Behaviors and Congregational Support
  14. Residential Concentrations of Income
  15. Water Access and Sanitation

PhenX SDoH Working Group Responsibilities

The goals of the PhenX SDoH WG were to:

  • Identify and review well-established measurement protocols and instruments currently in use in the field
  • Examine SDoH - related measurement protocols in the PhenX Toolkit to ensure that newly selected protocols complement existing Toolkit content
  • Select up to 14 preliminary protocols to share with the research community and get feedback (community outreach)
  • Suggest groups in the research community for the community outreach efforts
  • Consider feedback from community outreach when deciding the high-priority SDoH protocols to be included in the Toolkit
  • Present recommended protocols to the PhenX Steering Committee (SC) for approval
