Protocol - Knee Pain - Past 30 Days

Add to My Toolkit
Description

A self-report, three-item series of questions with answer choices for “Yes,” “No,” and “Don’t know.”

Specific Instructions

If question 1 is answered “No” or “Don’t know/Refused,” do not ask questions 1a or 1b. After question number 1, go to 1a and 1b if “Yes.” If the response is “No” to 1a, you should still go to 1b.

The phrase “During the past 30 days, have you had pain,,, “on most days” indicates pain on 15 or more days out of 30. However, a precise number is not needed. This applies to 1a and 1b.

Although the original questions were administered in a telephone interview, it would be better administered during an interview (to reduce confusion on the part of the subject). The PhenX Bone and Joint Working Group suggests that they may be used as self-administered items. For self-administration, the interviewer needs to introduce it and go over the instructions with the subject and allow subject to then complete.

The MOST datasets can only be obtained through the National Institute on Aging (NIA) Biobank. Those wishing to obtain the MOST datasets please go to the NIH Biobank website at: https://agingresearchbiobank.nia.nih.gov/studies/most/

Participants

Older Americans, men and women aged 50–79 with knee osteoarthritis or at increased risk of developing it. Some of these could be used in a more general population but may not have the same validity. Many in MOST and the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI) had no knee symptoms and it worked fine there. This set of questions has also been used in Framingham, a community-based cohort of adults aged 30 and over, mostly without knee pain.

Selection Rationale

The Multicenter Osteoarthritis Study (MOST) is a longitudinal, prospective, observational study of knee osteoarthritis (OA) with validated, simple questionnaires.
