This protocol includes 1 self-administered question adapted from the Million Veteran Program (MVP) Baseline Survey.

Specific Instructions

The following question regarding veteran status from the Million Veteran Program (MVP) Lifestyle Survey is also included in the PhenX measure Military Service Demographics, which can be found in the Post-traumatic Stress Psychopathology (including PTSD) Specialty collection. Therefore, selecting these two protocols together will result in a duplicated item.

Selection Rationale

Determining veteran status adds to the selection of demographic variables that may influence risk factors associated with use of tobacco-related products. This new measure recommended by the Tobacco Regulatory Research Panel is derived from the Military Service Demographics measure in the Mental Health Research Collection, Post-traumatic Stress Psychopathology (including PTSD) Specialty Collection.

Definition

A question that assesses whether the participant has served in the military.

Purpose

The U.S. military is the largest employer of young men (and increasingly, young women) in the United States. Military service is associated with increased exposure to events that can lead to physical and psychological health problems, including traumatic brain injury (TBI), suicidal behavior, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and depression.
