Protocol - Behavioral Disturbances

Add to My Toolkit
Description

The NPI-Q is a self-administered questionnaire used by informants (e.g., caregivers) to assess neuropsychiatric symptoms of a patient over the previous month and the effect on the patient and caregiver. Twelve domains and cardinal symptoms of each domain are assessed with yes/no responses. Both severity (a 3-point scale) and distress ratings (a 5-point scale) are recorded for each confirmed symptom. The severity scale applies to the effect on the patient, and the distress scale applies to the effect on the caregiver.

Specific Instructions

The NPI-Q is proprietary and copyrighted by Jeffrey L. Cummings, MD. The NPI-Q may be used freely for academic purposes, but there is a fee for commercial use. See this website for details about use of and access to the NPI-Q: http://npitest.net/terms-of-service.html.

Per NPI-Q background and administration documentation, it is recommended that responses to the NPI-Q be reviewed for completeness by a clinician and for clarifying uncertainties after each administration. The first time a subject completes the NPI-Q, it may be useful to verbally review the instructions. In some instances, it may be necessary to conduct the NPI-Q in part or entirely as an interview.

Current age of the patient (not respondent) is essential to this measure
