Description
The Hopelessness Scale for Children (HSC) consists of 17 interviewer-administered true-false items. The HSC is modeled on the Beck Hopelessness Scale and captures feelings about the future, loss of motivation, and future expectations. "True" responses to the following items are scored as "1": For items 2, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 17, "True" responses are scored as "1." For items1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 11, and 16, "False" responses are scored as "1." The higher the total score, the greater the hopelessness for the future.
Specific Instructions
This protocol includes questions that can potentially identify respondents who are at risk of suicide. Investigators implementing this protocol should consider developing a risk management plan specific to their study to ensure the safety of participants. Instructions to be read to the child: These sentences are about how some kids feel about their lives. Your answers let us know about how kids feel about things.
"I am going to read each sentence to you. I’d like you to tell me if the sentence is true for you or false for you. If the sentence is how you feel, you would say it is like you or true. If the sentence is not how you think you feel, you would say it is not like you or false.
"There is no right or wrong answers. Just tell me if the sentence is like you or not like you-true or false,"

Scoring
"True" responses to the following items are scored as "1": 2, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17
"False" responses to the following items are scored as "1": 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 11, 16
The higher the score, the greater the hopelessness for the future.
Personnel and Training Required
The interviewer must be trained to conduct personal interviews with individuals from the general population. The interviewer must be trained and found to be competent (i.e., tested by an expert) at the completion of personal interviews. The interviewer should be trained to prompt respondents further if a "don’t know" response is provided.
Equipment Needs
The PhenX Working Group acknowledges these questions can be administered in a computerized or noncomputerized format (i.e., paper-and-pencil instrument). Computer software is necessary to develop computer-assisted instruments. The interviewer will require a laptop computer/handheld computer to administer a computer-assisted questionnaire.
