Selection Rationale

The Monitoring the Future (MTF) protocol was chosen because it has been used in a comprehensive research project with large samples that are nationally representative. The MTF is a repeated series of surveys in which the same segments of the population (8th-, 10th-, and 12th-graders; college students; and young adults) are presented with the same set of questions over a period of years to see how answers change over time. The measures for this questionnaire have been validated and used widely in the literature with adolescents and young adults.

Process and Review

The Expert Review Panel #3 (ERP 3) reviewed the measures in Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Substances, and Substance Abuse and Addiction domains.

Guidance from ERP 3 includes:

• Updated protocol

• New Data Dictionary

Back-compatible: Not back-compatible (vastly different than previous protocol which would require a new data dictionary) and not recommended for use (discredited or no longer considered broadly validated)

Definition

Instruments used separately to assess the motives (reasons) for drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes, or using drugs.

Purpose

The purpose of this measure is to assess motives (reasons) for drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes, or using drugs, by asking the respondent questions about his/her thoughts and motivations for such actions. The Working Group recommends that investigators incorporate two DMQ-R subscales (coping and enhancement) as core items to obtain general information on a variety of substances. The follow-up protocols (including the full version of the DMQ-R) can then be used to obtain detailed information on a single substance.
