Definition

A questionnaire to assess harm avoidance, a personality trait or temperament characterized by worry, shyness, pessimism, doubt, and a tendency to respond intensely to aversive stimuli.

Purpose

Harm avoidance is a risk factor associated with various mental conditions. For example, a low degree of harm avoidance is associated with suicidal behavior and ideation while high harm avoidance (i.e., excessive worry) may progress into psychiatric disorders (e.g., anxiety, mood, and eating disorders) and functional impairment.
